Pinnacle Ozone Solutions has published a new case study and technical white paper on the City of Sanford’s Auxiliary Water Treatment Plant 2 (WTP 2), a 4.6 MGD facility in Sanford, Florida, that treats groundwater containing both hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) and bromide. Both are now available on our website.

The case study follows the project from a three-week ozone/GAC pilot study in 2011 through full-scale operation of a Pinnacle Zenith 30X™ ozone system, commissioned in 2014. During the pilot, ozone reduced raw-water sulfide of 1.45 to 1.88 mg/L to 0.01 mg/L or less on all ten sampling days and lowered UV254 absorbance by an average of 52 to 63 percent. Those results set a 7 to 8 mg/L design dose for the full-scale system, which later sulfide-spiked testing supported.

When bromate above the 10 µg/L federal limit appeared in late 2015, a 2016 investigation confirmed that sulfide removal remained fully effective and identified what was driving bromate: early formation in the injection and blending zone, operation well below design flow, dissolved ozone probe placement, and a residual setpoint higher than sulfide removal required. Lowering the residual setpoint from 0.300 to 0.075 mg/L reduced bromate from 11.8 to 7.6 µg/L with no loss of sulfide removal.

The white paper, available in both full and short versions, turns the Sanford project record into practical guidance for utilities and design engineers working with sulfide-bearing, bromide-containing groundwater. Its central lesson is that sulfide removal and bromate control should be designed together. Recommendations include piloting with representative water and measuring bromate from day one, treating the injection and blending zone as part of the reactor, designing for the flows a plant will actually run, and selecting sensor type and location for fast, accurate control.

The project was a collaboration among the City of Sanford Utility Department, CPH Engineers, Reiss Engineering, and Pinnacle Ozone Solutions. Today, WTP 2 continues to produce clear, odor-free water and serves as a model for Florida utilities treating sulfide-bearing groundwater with ozone.
